Judo classes at
Riga Grappling Club

If you're interested in Gi jiu-jitsu and want to develop confidence in your stand-up grappling skills, it requires dedicated training — and judo is the ideal solution. Judo will help you build an understanding of grip fighting, balance control, and of course, throwing techniques, giving you confidence in standing exchanges.

Our judo classes are a great complement to jiu-jitsu training, but you can also train judo as a standalone discipline — even if you don’t practice jiu-jitsu.

Judo group

Wednesday 18:00 — 19:30, Friday 17:30 — 18:30

Our classes are expertly structured and well-suited for beginners. Led by our dedicated coach, Mārtiņš Taube (black belt in Judo, purple belt in BJJ), the training emphasizes precise technique and gradual progress. Students learn the fundamentals of Judo step-by-step, starting with basic movements and throws and applying them in the context of BJJ. The training environment is safe and effective, allowing each participant to develop at their own pace and feel welcomed.

The History of Judo

The term "Judo" comes from Japanese, where "ju" means "gentle" or "flexible" and "do" means "way" or "path." Judo's predecessor is Japanese Jujutsu—a traditional martial art focused on close combat techniques. In the late 19th century, as Japanese society modernized and the samurai era ended, Jujutsu faced a decline in popularity and relevance.

Judo was founded by Jigoro Kano, who synthesized various Jujutsu styles, refined the techniques, and created a new training culture that could be practiced as a sport.
Kano’s approach to Judo emphasizes mutual growth and the integration of physical development with character building and values. One of Kano’s key principles is "maximum efficiency with minimum effort," a cornerstone of Judo that remains central to the practice today. Thanks to Kano’s efforts, Judo is now practiced by over 40 million people in 184 countries around the world.
