What is BJJ?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world, yet in Latvia many still ask — what is it?

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu strategy for physical confrontation is, firstly, to redirect the fight to the ground as quickly as possible, secondly, to control the opponent positionally and, thirdly, to achieve surrenders by applying pain or yawning techniques.

Why on earth? At its roots, BJJ addresses the question of how a smaller and physically weaker opponent defeats a larger attacker by knocking a person to the ground deprives him of much of his strength, most people are poorly coordinated and less strong when lying down.

History

Martial arts have roots in Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo martial arts, when a Japanese jiu-jitsu master named Mitsujo Maeda arrived in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century (Mitsuyo Maeda). Although he had several great students, it is the Grace (Gracie) dynasty that is to be thanked for BJJ's recognition in the world today.

BJJ experienced its explosion of popularity in 1993 with the first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), in which one of the representatives of the Gracie clan, Hoyes (Royce Gracie) — shocked the world by defeating much larger and more physically impressive opponents using the then little-known martial art. At the same time, sports jiu-jitsu also began to develop, where self-defense is an important part of the heritage, however, the training process and goals are focused more on sports.

Our approach to BJJ

At Riga Grappling Club, our primary focus is on BJJ as a martial sport. While we incorporate self-defense elements into our training, our emphasis is on BJJ as a competitive sport. We believe that mastering the fundamentals of BJJ not only prepares you for sport but also equips you with practical self-defense skills and confidence in physical confrontations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BJJ and Grappling?

BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) is a martial art focused on ground fighting, using techniques like joint locks and chokeholds. It typically involves training with a gi (uniform) but also includes no-gi variations. BJJ has a structured belt system and specific rules.

Grappling is a broader term that includes various forms of ground fighting, such as wrestling, judo, sambo, and submission wrestling. It emphasizes control, takedowns, and submissions, often without a gi, and is commonly used in MMA. While BJJ is a type of grappling, grappling covers more styles and techniques beyond BJJ alone.

Why Choose BJJ/Grappling?

Jiu Jitsu is a great activity that helps:

  • Become stronger and develop flexibility, mobility and endurance
  • Overcome fear and develop character
  • Learn self-defense skills
  • Meet new people and find friends
  • Become part of an international community
Is This a Safe Sport?

Although any contact combat sport is a physical challenge and involves risks, BJJ is one of the safest full-contact fighting sports, as there is no threat of the consequences of strikes and kicks.
