Building a Positive Training Environment

Creating a safe and beneficial training environment is a challenge that coaches and senseis have addressed for centuries. Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, encapsulated this concept perfectly with the principle of Jita Kyōei, which translates to "mutual prosperity and benefit." Though it might sound complex, this principle is both straightforward and practical. It emphasizes the importance of balancing personal growth with caring for your training partners—a philosophy that extends far beyond the confines of the dojo and into everyday life. By adhering to Jita Kyōei, we ensure that our training environment promotes not just individual achievement but also collective well-being and respect.

Jita Kyōei: Why it Matters?

The need for principles like Jita Kyōei becomes evident when we consider the negative consequences that arise from neglecting mutual respect and safety in training environments. When personal gain is prioritized at the expense of others, it can lead to several detrimental outcomes: dangerous sparring sessions, unhealthy competition, and a toxic atmosphere that can alienate newcomers. In such environments, the focus shifts from personal and collective improvement to self-centered achievements, which can create a sense of fear and hostility among practitioners. Newcomers, in particular, may feel threatened and unwelcome, which can deter them from continuing their training and negatively impact their overall experience. By upholding Jita Kyōei, we strive to create a training space where respect, safety, and mutual support are paramount, thereby fostering a more inclusive and positive community for everyone involved.

Practical application of Jita Kyōei

Sparring

Sparring is a fundamental component of martial arts training, providing an opportunity to test and apply techniques in real-time scenarios. However, the principle of Jita Kyōei serves as a crucial reminder that the goal of sparring goes beyond mere victory. It emphasizes that ensuring the safety of your sparring partner and aiding their improvement are equally important. For instance, when sparring with a less experienced partner, it is essential to adjust your intensity and provide them with opportunities to practice and refine their techniques as well. Rather than going full strength, which can be overwhelming and discouraging for a beginner, focus on constructive feedback and guidance. This approach not only supports their growth but also enhances the overall skill level of the entire club, as a rising tide lifts all boats. By fostering an environment where safety and mutual improvement are prioritized, we contribute to a more effective and supportive training experience for everyone.

Communication

Effective communication is the bedrock of a strong and cohesive community. The principle of Jita Kyōei advocates for open, kind, and constructive dialogue among practitioners. During training, sharing knowledge and experiences is crucial for mutual growth and improvement. This involves not only discussing techniques and strategies but also offering encouragement and support to fellow practitioners. Outside the dojo, the principle extends to treating club members with respect and fostering positive, supportive relationships. Open and respectful communication helps build trust and camaraderie within the club, creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute to the collective success.

Inclusion of Newcomers

Welcoming new members and helping them acclimate to the club is another vital aspect of Jita Kyōei. Newcomers often face a period of adjustment as they learn the basics and integrate into the training community. The principle encourages experienced practitioners to take an active role in assisting newcomers by explaining foundational techniques and offering guidance and encouragement. This support not only helps newcomers build their skills and confidence but also strengthens the sense of community within the club. By fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels supported and valued, we enhance the overall training experience and ensure that each member can contribute to and benefit from the collective growth of the group.

Implementing Jita Kyōei. Where to Start?

For Jita Kyōei to be truly effective, it must be demonstrated "from the top." This means that coaches and seasoned members play a crucial role in modeling this principle through their behavior and attitude. When those in leadership positions embody the values of mutual respect, safety, and support, they set a standard for all members to follow. This creates a training environment where students can develop both physically and mentally in a safe and nurturing space. Coaches should lead by example, demonstrating how to engage in sparring, communicate effectively, and support newcomers. By establishing these practices, we ensure that Jita Kyōei becomes an integral part of our club culture, fostering a positive and enriching training environment for everyone involved.

Jita Kyōei in the European context

While the concept of Jita Kyōei originated in 19th-century Japan, its relevance extends to modern training environments in Europe, including Latvia. Although BJJ often has a more informal and relaxed atmosphere compared to traditional oriental martial arts, the core values of Jita Kyōei still provide a valuable framework. This allows for a blend of challenge and camaraderie, ensuring that while we strive to improve ourselves, we also care for and support those around us. In the European context, where BJJ training may be less formal, the principles of Jita Kyōei help maintain a balanced and respectful environment, where the pursuit of personal growth is harmonized with the well-being of the community. By embracing these values, we can build a positive and inclusive training environment that benefits everyone in our BJJ community.

At the Riga Grappling Club, we are committed to upholding the principles of Jita Kyōei to create a supportive and respectful training environment. This philosophy guides us in fostering a community where mutual respect and personal growth are central to our training experience. By adhering to Jita Kyōei, we not only enhance our individual skills but also contribute to the overall success and well-being of our club
