First BJJ Training: What to Expect and How to Prepare

The first training session in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a memorable experience that you’ll likely carry with you for a lifetime. However, it can also feel quite intimidating. I remember my own first class—filled with excitement about starting this new journey, but also anxious and scared. Questions raced through my mind: What will the coach be like? How will the other students receive me? Will everyone be really aggressive? Will I embarrass myself? I’m sure many people have similar thoughts, especially if you live in a post-Soviet country, where martial arts training rooms often have a distinct, intimidating vibe.

No Smoke Without Fire

Let’s be honest—martial arts dojos and gyms can sometimes feel like closed-off environments, where tough guys are molded in tough conditions. While there’s some truth to this stereotype, BJJ offers a refreshing balance between that old-school intensity and a more welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. One of the unique aspects of BJJ is its scalability; you can adapt your training to fit your goals, whether that’s pushing yourself to the limits in serious, competitive training or just having fun a couple of times per week.

Finding the Right Gym

Not all BJJ academies are the same, so finding the right fit might take some effort. Start by identifying your goals: Are you looking to become a competitive athlete, or are you interested in BJJ as a hobby? Once you’re clear on your objectives, do some research, check reviews, and try a trial class.

Practical Tips

Whether you’re aspiring to compete or just want to try a new hobby and are totally out of shape, be upfront and ask which classes are best tailored for your situation. Here are some practical tips to help you get started:

Evaluate Reviews

Reviews can offer valuable insights into the vibe and quality of a gym. Check Google reviews and ask around—you might know someone who has trained there or has connections. Pay attention to the communication style of the coaches; it often reflects the atmosphere of the training room.

Align Your Goals

One of BJJ's greatest strengths is its adaptability, but not every club or group will cater to every goal. If you’re an adult looking to train casually, it’s best to avoid classes designed for high-level athletes. Conversely, if you’re young, ambitious, and looking to compete seriously, you’ll want to join a more focused, competitive group.

Stay Calm and Be Respectful

This might sound obvious, but it’s a tip I wish I’d received before my first session! If you jump straight into sparring, keep your cool. There’s no need to go full strength; it’s common for adrenaline to take over, but trust me—it’s not worth it. Remember, you’re not there to prove anything. At least here, in Riga grappling Club, if you have never trained, you would not be allowed to spar, but as I mentioned, it could be different in other academies.

Arrive Early

Arriving about 20 minutes early can make a big difference. It gives you the chance to meet the coaches, chat with other students, and familiarize yourself with the gym, making the experience far less stressful than rushing in right as warm-ups begin.

Practical Preparations

Finally, make sure you’re practically prepared for your first session. Find out if there’s a fee for the first class and bring the essentials: slippers, water, a towel, shower supplies, and appropriate training attire like shorts and a t-shirt. Ask if gi is mandatory, maybe it can be rented.

Our Approach

At Riga Grappling Club, our goal from the outset has been to create an environment where your first training session is a positive and memorable experience. We strive to ensure that beginners feel welcomed, supported, and inspired from the moment they step onto the mats. Whether you’re here to compete, learn, or simply have fun, we’re committed to making your journey in BJJ an exciting and rewarding one.
